Fractures of the radius and ulna are especially common in small-breed dogs and cats. Because these bones provide almost all the support for the front leg, they cannot heal correctly with a cast or splint alone. Proper surgical repair is essential for restoring comfort and function.


Why These Fractures Require Surgery

Unlike other bones that have strong muscle layers around them, the radius and ulna have very little soft-tissue support. This means:

  • Bones easily shift out of place

  • Splints and casts cannot hold them in alignment

1. Bone Plate Fixation

For fractures near the wrist, the plate is often placed on the medial (inside) surface to avoid irritating nearby tendons.


2. External Skeletal Fixation (ESF)

  • Soft tissues are injured

  • The fracture is very complex

  • The patient is a small or toy breed

The frame keeps the bones aligned while healing occurs. ESFs also allow wounds to be cleaned and monitored easily.


3. Intramedullary Pinning

Pinning the radius is not recommended, as the bone’s shape makes safe pin placement impossible. However, a small pin may be used in the ulna to add support to a plate or external fixator when needed.


What Pet Owners Should Expect

Hospital Stay

Most pets stay 1–2 days for pain management, stabilization, and monitoring.

At-Home Care

Your role is very important during recovery. You will need to:

  • Keep your pet confined to a crate or small room

  • Use an Elizabethan collar to protect the incision

  • Prevent jumping, stairs, or slipping

  • Take your pet out only for short, controlled leash walks

No casts or splints are needed after plating—these may actually slow healing or cause joint stiffness.


Healing & Recovery Timeline

Most pets show steady improvement over a few weeks. Healing generally takes:

  • 8–12 weeks depending on age, fracture type, and fixation method

Your veterinarian will schedule follow-up X-rays to ensure the bone is healing correctly.


Long-Term Outlook

With proper surgical repair and careful post-operative care, most pets make a full recovery and return to their normal activities. Small and toy breeds, which are historically prone to non-healing fractures, do exceptionally well when repaired with modern plating techniques.

1. How can I tell if my pet has broken their radius or ulna?

6. How long does recovery take?

Most fractures heal within 8–12 weeks, although healing may be faster in young animals. Your pet will need restricted activity during this time and will return for follow-up X-rays.


7. Can my pet walk on the leg right after surgery?

Some toe-touching is normal early on, but full weight-bearing may take several weeks. Controlled activity is important to protect the repair and prevent complications.


8. Do I need to use a splint or bandage after surgery?

No. A soft bandage may be used for a few days to control swelling, but rigid splints or casts should not be used after internal fixation, as they can delay healing and cause joint stiffness.


9. What complications should I watch for at home?

Contact your veterinarian if you notice swelling, redness, odor, refusal to use the leg after the first few weeks, or discharge from the incision. These could indicate infection or implant irritation.


10. Will my pet regain full function?

Yes. Most pets return to normal activity after healing is complete. With proper surgical repair and home care, long-term outcomes are excellent.
